 2023 Preview

Central completed the 2022 season with a 9-3 record. Last year Central captured the region four title and a number one seed in the Class 5A playoffs. They finished region play with a 5-0 record. Central reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Gulf Shores by a score of 26-21.

The defense was very stingy last season as Central Clay County ranked 36th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 14.9 points a game.

Central is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only eleven seasons. They have managed a record of 105-34 over the past eleven years.

Over the past 11 seasons, Central has finished a combined 105-34. Their 76.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 5A and 13th in the AHSAA.

The Volunteers are led by head coach Danny Horn who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 54-13 over the past five seasons at Central. Under his direction the Volunteers have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have won three region crowns with Coach Horn. Coach Horn has won two state championships at Central, the last coming in 2019. His 341 wins rank 2nd among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Horn's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of times and won seventeen region championships. He has a 75-23 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Horn won six state championships prior to arriving at Central, the last coming in 2005 at Clay County.

The Volunteers enter the 2023 season riding a 6 game regular season winning streak.

The Volunteers are considered one of the favorites for the region four championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

The Volunteers open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Benjamin Russell on Friday, September 1 at Martin-Savarese Stadium. Last year the Benjamin Russell Wildcats finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in third place in Class 6A region three. The Wildcats lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Hueytown by a score of 56-28.

Central and Benjamin Russell have met a total of 10 times on the football field. The Volunteers have a 5-5-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2022 with Benjamin Russell winning by a score of 33-14.

Central lost 5A All-State  offensive lineman Bryant Hamlet to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates running back Terry Heflin and defensive back Keisen Lindsey.
